Who’s in? Who’s out? The playoff clinching scenarios for the NFL in Week 18

If you’re a team like the New York Giants heading into Week 18, you’re in luck.

The Giants are the No. 6 seed in the NFC. Their playoff berth is locked and the seeding cannot be moved up or down. Relatively speaking, a less stressful week before the playoff pressure kicks in.

Other teams have more uncertainty. There are many decisions to make in the final week of the NFL season. Let’s analyze the decisive scenario.

NFC East is still unsolved

The Philadelphia Eagles’ second straight loss means the Dallas Cowboys are still in contention for the NFC East title and number one seed. In the finale, the Eagles will face the Giants with nothing to play. The Eagles are the NFC East champions and the #1 seed if they win. If the Cowboys lose, they will also close out the division.

The San Francisco 49ers are suddenly alive for the No. 1 seed. If the 49ers win and the Eagles lose, the 49ers will be the top seed. If the Eagles and he lose the 49ers and the Cowboys win, Dallas will be the top seed and bye-bye. If the Cowboys and 49ers lose, the Eagles will be the number one seed.

If the Eagles beat the Giants, the NFC playoff results would be pretty clean. If the Eagles lose, there are a lot of moving parts to work out.

Most NFC seeds available

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the No. 4 seed. Giants he is sixth. It’s the only thing that’s locked.

The Eagles, 49ers, Cowboys and Vikings could still be the second seed. The 49ers are the most likely second seed. If they win and the Eagles win too, they’ll get it. The Eagles’ loss opens up a potential second seed for the Cowboys or the Phillies. If the 49ers lose and win, the Vikings will take the No. 2 seed. The Eagles or Cowboys cannot be the 3rd seed (they will play the 6th seed Giants in the wildcard round). It will be Vikings or 49ers.

The NFC East runner-up is the No. 5 seed between the Eagles and Cowboys. Reaching the 7th seed in no time.

Again, the Eagles win makes things a lot easier. If Philadelphia loses, it will be a mess.

NFC 7th seed

The final wildcard spot for NFC is pretty easy to figure out. If the Green Bay Packers beat the Detroit Lions, the Packers will participate. If the Packers lose and the Seattle Seahawks win, the Seahawks will participate. If the Seahawks lose and the Lions beat the Packers, Detroit will participate.

Two AFC divisions still in play

The Cincinnati Bengals could take control of the AFC North with a win on Monday night. In the event of a loss, the winner of the Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens in Week 18 will be his division champion.

The winner of Saturday night’s game between the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars will clinch the AFC South and become the fourth seed. There is a scenario where the Jaguars lose and still get a wild card spot.

AFC 1st seed

Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals will have a big impact on seeding. If Bills wins, he’s the number one seed. If he loses either of his last two games for the Bills, it will pave the way for the Kansas City Chiefs to clinch the No. 1 seed. The Chiefs won the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday and he lost one to the Bills to earn the No. 1 seed. If the Bengals win and the Chiefs lose, the Bengals will be the #1 seed. The Bengals will lead the No. 2 seed over the Bills with a win on Monday night.

If the Ravens win AFC North, they’ll be the third seed.

AFC Wildcard

The Los Angeles Chargers are the No. 5 seed after the Ravens lost in Week 17. They secured that slot with a win in Week 18 and will play in the AFC South Champions on a wild card weekend in place of someone from the Bills/Bengals./Chief Trio. The Chargers win a tiebreak against either the Bengals or the Ravens.

The AFC’s seventh seed would be the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers or Jaguars. The Patriots are the winning team, but will play the Buffalo Bills in Week 18. If the Patriots lose, the Dolphins can beat the New York Jets for a spot. If the Patriots and Dolphins lose, the Steelers can win the Cleveland Browns for the final wild card spot.

If the Patriots lose to the Bills, the Dolphins lose to the Jets, the Steelers lose to the Browns, and the Jaguars lose to the Titans, the Jaguars are the 7th seed. If the Patriots, Dolphins, and Steelers lose and the Jaguars win in his AFC South, the Patriots will return to his No. 7 spot.
