SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is a federal program that provides food-buying assistance to low-income families. Although part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program is administered at the state level.

North Carolina’s SNAP program, known as Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), is administered by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHSS). SNAP rewards are credited to North Carolina Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards.

SNAP eligibility is based on household size and income. There are three ways to apply for SNAP/FNS benefits in North Carolina.

  2. In person at your county’s Department of Social Services (DSS) office. It helps to fill out as many forms as possible in advance.

  3. Complete the paper application and mail or bring it to your county DSS office.

SNAP recipients in North Carolina can use their EBT cards to receive discounts on certain products and services. EBT cards can also be used for free or discounted admission to hundreds of museums, aquariums and zoos nationwide.
