WCTEL generates two tons of food donations

NEWBERRY COUNTY — When WCTEL asked customers and members for a big donation, people listened.

The organization’s first food drive of its kind, the “Give Big, Get Gig” initiative offers at least three non-perishable foods to local food pantries in exchange for a complimentary speed boost to WCTEL’s premier speed tier, 1 Gigabit. asked customers to donate December.

WCTEL CEO Jeff Wilson said: “It is a powerful statement to see so many people taking action in ways that greatly benefit their neighbors and citizens.”

Nearly 3 tons of food were donated during the campaign, which supported food pantries in Abbeville, Greenwood, McCormick, Iva and Newbury counties. Donations were collected at his WCTEL office throughout November, and on Friday, December 9, he donated equally to all five regions in a company-wide concerted effort.

“Our customers don’t need to be incentivized. But we wanted to thank them too. December can be a busy time for everyone,” Wilson said. “Houses filled with guests and families, many of whom are connected to WiFi while playing games, streaming their favorite shows, working from home, or connecting new home security devices. If I can help my fellow neighbors in exchange for giving them a little speed and help with their vacation experience, it’s a no-brainer.”

Supported pantries are:

• UCMAC.

• Greenwood County Food Bank.

• Iva Food Bank.

• McCormick Helping Hands United.

• Newbury Living Hope Foundation food pantry.
