Tesla is rumored to integrate Dolby Atmos in its electric cars

Tesla is rumored to be working on integrating Dolby Atmos into its electric cars to provide better surround sound.

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology developed by Dolby Laboratories. The company describes it as “extending an existing surround sound system by adding a height channel, allowing the sound to be interpreted as his three-dimensional object.”

It’s been around for about 10 years, so it’s not all that new, but it was first incorporated into movie theaters, then into high-end home theaters, and more recently into automobiles.

Lucid began integrating the technology into its electric sedan, the Air, last year, and since then several other automakers, including Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, have announced Dolby Atmos integration.

BGR reports, citing unnamed sources, that Tesla is working to integrate this technology into its vehicles.

One of Tesla’s upcoming software updates should significantly upgrade the sound system of current and new vehicles. Sources say Tesla has been working with major record labels for months to bring Dolby Atmos to Tesla vehicles. Once the software update is rolled out, more than 1 million Teslas currently on the road will support Dolby Atmos, including all newly built vehicles.

In recent years, Tesla has focused heavily on in-car sound systems.

The sound system on the Model 3 has been well received by audiophiles, and so has the new version of the sound system on the Model S.

compared to expensive bang & Olufsen A system commonly found in premium vehicles, but at a fraction of the price.

When reviewers took to Twitter to make the comparison, Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented:

Tesla’s audio engineers come from B&O and many other companies. They literally rock. Our system is highly programmable, so we continue to improve it through OTA codec updates.

In fact, Tesla has several audio engineers from Bang & Olufsen. The lead audio engineer is Markus Koch, who worked at Harman and Bang & Olufsen for over a decade before joining Tesla in 2015. .

Most recently, Tesla hired several engineers from Jawbone and Amazon Lab126 to develop Echo speakers.

The company also integrates a range of music streaming services directly into the car, as well as apps built to work on the center display.

Most notably, Tesla has integrated Spotify into its vehicles as its primary music streaming app. Last year, the automaker also integrated his Tidal. Earlier this week, we also reported that Tesla was hinting at Apple Music integration coming soon.
