Montgomery, Alabama. — A member of the airline’s ground crew who worked at the Alabama airport died Saturday afternoon in an accident at the facility.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that ground support personnel were “swallowed by the engine” of the aircraft while the aircraft was parked at the gate with the parking brake set. said it had launched an investigation.
The Montgomery Regional Airport said in a statement that an American Airlines/Piedmont Airlines employee died in an “industrial accident” around 3 p.m.
“We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of an AA/Piedmont Airlines team member,” airport executive director Wade Davis said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. .”
In a post on Twitter, the airport said normal operations would resume at 8:30 p.m. and that an FAA investigation into the incident was ongoing.
American Airlines did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting additional information.
