After 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy led his team to a come-from-behind victory over the Raiders on Sunday, his teammates raved about his composure under pressure.
San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Ayuk called the Audible, told his teammates what to do, and when he methodically drove the offense down the field, it was a moment’s notice that Purdy was leading the two-minute offense. He said he had no doubts.
“He handled it well. He did a great job. Very calm guy — Great calm guy. No moment is too big for him,” Ayuk said. “He’s leading his two-minute drive, signaling wide, changing his call to play. Today showed that I think this guy is on another level.”
Aiyuk said Purdy became the 49ers’ leader just months after becoming Mr. Inlevant in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“How cool he is and how he plays in the quarterback position,” Ayuk said. “He’s doing a great job leading us all.”
Purdy was not expected to play this season, having taken the field after starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo were injured. Now, Purdy seems to be the quarterback who can lead the 49ers deep into this year’s postseason, as well as the quarterback who pushes Lance aside to be the 49ers’ long-term answer.
