A 17-year-old boy died and three teenagers were injured in a drive-by shooting at Washington Park on the South Side on Sunday – the third killing in Chicago on New Year’s Day.
Chicago Police Chief Chis Papaioannou told reporters at the scene that the victim was in a Kia motor vehicle driving north on Prairie Avenue at 57th Street when another vehicle passed by and the inside of the vehicle was destroyed. He said someone shot him.
Police said the vehicle continued north as gunmen continued to fire at the victims.
Officers responded to ShotSpotter’s gunshot detection alert around 1 p.m. when they found the injured teenager running off the road inside the Kia and lying on the sidewalk, Papaioanow said.
A 17-year-old driver of Kia Motors has died, Papaioannou said.
Other children, aged 14, 15 and 17, were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and Comer Children’s Hospital, police spokesman Tom Ahern said. Two of them were in normal condition and one of them was in critical condition. Ahern said the victims were all men.
Papaioannou said Kia was stolen on Friday, but did not say where it came from.
It was unclear whether the vehicle’s occupants interacted prior to the shooting. Police did not disclose whether weapons were recovered or the motive for the shooting.
At the scene, police taped up a silver Kia car with a dozen bullet shells in the middle of the street spanning a half block.
A woman who has lived on the block for 23 years said she heard two long gunshots. The block is usually quiet, she said, and you don’t see this kind of violence.
“Today is the first day of the year and they have already started doing this,” said the woman, who requested anonymity.
The shooting occurred at Police Station No. 2, where there have been fewer shootings and homicides than last year. Police statistics show that the district stretching from Bronzeville to Woodlawn will have 122 shootings and 31 homicides from 2022 through December 25, 16% and 21% respectively from last year. Diminished.
The driver’s death was the third of four killings in Chicago in 2023.
Less than two hours after midnight, a man was killed and another injured in a shootout inside a West Town store on the 2100 block of West Division Street.
Hours later at 4:30 am, a man was shot dead at Block 3800 South Wallace Street in Bridgeport.
At approximately 4:20 p.m., while the man was in the 5000 block of West Superior Avenue, someone in a car drove up and the occupants opened fire and killed the man.
Police are offering a $15,000 reward to anyone who provides information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
